THE SOCIOPOLITICAL landscape in Taiwan, the Republic of China, changed in 1971 when the U.S. canceled its defense treaty with the island and gave recognition to mainland China. Taiwan was then left to fend for itself. Over the years, American aid had fostered economic growth and initiated industrialization which enabled the republican regime to prosper. Slowly but surely, from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, Taiwan became one of the world's leaders in terms of national gold reserves.
