As architectural historian Stephen Fox notes in the afterword to this book, the character of Galveston, Texas, has not been captured by noteworthy authors or artists, unique culinary styles, or musical compositions. Instead, "[t]he identifying image of Galveston .... is the streets of closely packed houses .... the turrets, window bays, and ramped stairs .... the vividness with which the sun causes embedded tile work to sparkle or liquefies molded brickwork" (p. 199).
