Coastal Processes with Engineering Applications Robert G. Dean and Robert A. Dalrymple
Cambridge University Press, 2002
Book Review by Edward M. Lewandowski
This book provides an overview of the "new" (relative to, say, Naval Architecture) field of Coastal Engineering, a discipline that has " the objective of understanding coastal processes and developing strategies to cope effectively with shoreline erosion". The recent upsurge in activity in coastal regions, related mostly to growth of tourism and recreational endeavors, has led to development that often conflicts with natural coastal processes. The book is intended to provide an understanding of these processes and to aid in the development of strategies to deal effectively with shoreline erosion.
The book is organized into four sections, each of which is essentially independent of the others; thus the reader is free to select those sections that are of the most interest (although the first section is a requirement for those unfamiliar with the basic concepts and terminology):
Introduction to Coastal Processes
(overview; sediment characteristics; long-term processes; equilibrium profile)
Hydrodynamics...
