This is a book about a man and a tank. Dmitriy Loza served from 1943 to 1945 as a guards officer in the Sixth Guards Tank Army, ending the war as a captain commanding a tank battalion. The "guards" prefix signified earned elite status. The title Hero of the Soviet Union, always awarded jointly with the Gold Star Medal-which is shown in the author's picture on the dust jacket-installed the recipient in the pantheon of the Soviet military immortals.
