English literature is looking up. In the months gone by we have reviewed and welcomed several Cambridge Companions to Literature, including those by Ian Ousby and the latest in the series, that devoted to George Bernard Shaw. Now we are pleased to welcome Blackwells into the fold. They have already published companions to Romanticism and to Victorian literature and culture, and now in 1999 they have issued this companion to Shakespeare. A recent BBC poll came up with the fact that Shakespeare had been chosen as the "Man of the Millennium", well ahead of such men as Charlemagne, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Churchill. So there is a hope yet for English literature, history and culture! And if further proof were needed of the place William Shakespeare holds in the world...
