IT'S MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE CONSTANCE PENLEY, WHOSE WORK IN FILM, feminism, psychoanalysis, and popular culture has intersected with the fields of science fiction and fan studies. Dr. Penley, who received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, is a professor of film and media studies at UC Santa Barbara. She is co-director of the Carsey-Wolf Center, which supports research, teaching, and public programming about media, and director of the Blue Horizons Summer Program for Environmental Media (a Carsey-Wolf initiative), a 9-week course where students learn how to make documentaries.
Dr. Penley's books include The Future of an Illusion: Film, Feminism, and Psychoanalysis (1989) and NASA/TREK: Popular Science and Sex in America (1997). She is a founding member of the collective that created the journal Camera Obscura, and she is editor or coeditor of a number of edited volumes on such topics as gender, technology, and imaging technologies.
