FERGUSON, T. S. A Course in Large Sample Theory. Chapman & Hall, London, 1996. ix + 245 pp. 27.50/$45.95. ISBN 0-412-043718. This book is intended for a first year graduate course in asymptotic theory. Graduate students from a variety of disciplines (including biostatistics and biomathematics) have taken the author's courses on which the book is based. Essential prerequisites are good undergraduate courses in analysis and mathematical statistics. The text has been structured with self study in view. It is divided into 24 short sections, each dealing with a specific topic. The basic idea or central result of a section is stated as a theorem. All except one of the sections end with exercises for the reader. The sections are grouped into four parts: Basic probability; Basic statistical large sample theory; Special topics; Efficient estimation and testing. There is a lengthy appendix containing solutions to all the exercises, a list of 34 references, and a good subject index.
