ZWILLINGER, D. and KOKOSKA, S. CRC Standard Probability and Statistics Tables and Formulae. Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, Boca Raton, Florida, 2000. viii - 554 pp. L36.99/$51.95. ISBN 1-58488-059-7.
Daniel Zwillinger is a busy man. As well as co-authoring this book, he is editor-in-chief of CRC's Standard Mathematical Tables and Formulae and author of Handbook of Differential Equations (Academic Press, 1997) and Handbook of Integration (A. K. Peters, 1992). The present book provides a remarkably diverse collection of material on probability and statistics. Certainly there are tables and formulae, as indicated by the title, but there is much else as well.
After a short introductory chapter that gives three small data sets used as examples later in the book, there is a chapter on numerical and graphical summaries for simple data sets. The next two chapters provide a solid introduction to probability, including combinatorial problems, axioms for probability, random variables, expectation and generating functions, multivariate random variables, transformations and inequalities involving random variables. Order statistics are also discussed, with tables of means and covariances of normal order statistics. The next two chapters then catalogue discrete and continuous distributions, giving basic properties, links between distributions, and tables. Further material on the normal distribution is given in a separate chapter.
The next three chapters address point estimation,...
