In a retrospective study, five paediatric patients [sexes not stated] aged 1 month-5.8 years developed phlyctena type skin reactions (burns) following application of cyanoacrylate [Integuseal; n-butyl cyanoacrylate] at the surgical wound [dosages not stated].
Case 1: A 3-month-old infant underwent closure of ventricular septal defect (VSD), inter-atrial communications (IAC) and mitral valve repair on 07 January 2013. Before entering to the operation room, the infant was prepared with an antiseptic shower, and then the application of cyanoacrylate to the operative area was performed with the 'ready to use' device applicator. The duration of surgery was 4 hours and 40 minutes. After three days of the surgery, the infant developed skin reaction (burns) in the sternal area. The infant received treatment with an emollient emulsion of trolamine [Biafine]. Within a few days, the lesions resolved without visible sequelae. Dermatologist examination was not required.
