Cyril Josephs was born in Newcastle, the third of four sons. After qualifying he embarked on a career in paediatrics, inspired by the teaching of the late Professor C W Vining, with whom he worked at Leeds General Infirmary. At the age of 30, he was diagnosed with otosclerosis and was advised that deafness would make such a career impossible. Having gained a medical doctorate from the University of Durham in 1950, he moved south to start life as a general practitioner. In 1951 he started working in Lambeth Walk practice, south London, where he was a singlehanded GP for several years, before joining Stockwell Group Practice.
