A 40-year-old man was admitted on five occasions after self-induced overdoses of dalteparin sodium [Fragmin]; on three of these occasions, he developed either bleeding or compartment syndrome.
The man, who had a psychiatric history of impulsive actions, was receiving dalteparin sodium for venous thromboembolic disease [dosage, route and duration of treatment not stated]. In October 2009, he was admitted after injecting five doses of dalteparin sodium 18 000IU the day before, followed by another 12 doses on admission day (total dose 306 000IU). He had no signs of bleeding. He received protamine, after which he discharged himself against medical advice.
