Just as contemporary warlordism has many historical precedents, the essays brought together by Bruce Campbell and Arthur Brenner demonstrate that the concept of the death squad is neither a new phenomenon nor, indeed, one exclusive to the third world. Campbell and Brenner are both specialists on Weimar Germany and there is an interesting contribution by Brenner on the groups associated with the former Freikorps, particularly the Black Reichswehr, responsible for a substantial number of political assassinations in Weimar Germany.
