DEFIANT ACTS / ACTOS DESAFIANTES is a bilingual collection of four Spanish plays and their respective English translations. An essay by Diana Taylor, professor of performance studies at New York University, comments on the four plays and gives a biography of Diana Raznovich, the author of the plays. The plays translated were rendered into English by Victoria Martinez in collaboration with Lidia Ramirez. The collection is formed by two one-act plays (Disconcerted / El Desconcierto and MaTRIX, Inc. / Casa matrix) and two two-act plays (Inner Gardens / Jardin de otono and Rear Entry / De atras para adelante).
Diana Raznovich is an Argentinian playwright and cartoonist, a "Jewish, bisexual, Oscar Wildesque woman coming of age during the time of the Dirty War (1976-1983)." In 1967 her first play won a theater contest in Buenos Aires. From 1975 to 1981 she lived in Spain, after her life was threatened by the Argentinean Armed Forces. She went back to Argentina...
