IN China on the Eve of Communist Takeover (Frederick A. Praeger, 1963), an eyewitness account of the fall of the Nanking government on Mainland China, A. Doak Barnett reported that Zhang Junmai believed "more can be accomplished by trying to reform the present government from within than by working from the outside." Apparently not very impressed by Zhang's remarks, Barnett wrote in the same book that "how much Chang (Zhang) himself is accomplishing in this respect is a moot point"(p. 23).
