WRITING STUDENT-ORIENTED COMMENTARIES on classical texts today demands a subtle, multifaceted pedagogy. And writing one on the most famous speech of Athens' greatest orator provides more than its share of potential pitfalls. Students will come to this text from all sorts of angles, whether historical, rhetorical, legal, or biographical, but they are unlikely to come to the text as complete beginners.
