The Department of Otolaryngology had a very productive academic year. This was heralded by an increased productivity in terms of research grants, publications, and presentations at national and international meetings. Some important honours were received by various faculty members. Highlights include the following:
* Dr. Martin J. Black was named to the Faculty of Honour List for Educational Excellence at McGill University.
* Dr. Athanassios Katsarkas received the Best Teacher Award for the 1997-1998 academic year.
* Dr. Melvin D. Schloss joined the Faculty Scholar's Program at McGill University.
* Dr Karen Kost and Dr. Anthony Zeitouni presented a course on percutaneous tracheostomy at the 1998 American Academy Meeting.
Research grants received included the following
* Dr. Martin J. Black, coinvestigator, National Cancer Institute of Canada, for a control study of human papillomavirus and oral cancers.
* Dr. Martin Desrosiers, investigator, Respironics grant for the study of topical antibiotics and chronic sinusitis.
* Dr. Saul Frenkiel and Dr. Martin Desrosiers, Biomatrix research grant for the study of Hylasine after endoscopic sinus surgery.
* Dr. R. Funnel, MRC operating grant until the year 2001 on quantitative modelling of the middle ear.
*Dr. H. Galiana and Dr. A. Katsarkas, NSERC, FCAR, and MRC grants on vestibular physiology.
* Dr. Jamie Rappaport, Deafness Hearing Foundation Grant to study postmeningitic deafness.
* Dr. Bernard Segal, NSERC grant to study wireless radio frequency communication and health.
Research fellows in the Department of Otolaryngology included Dr. K. Al-Ghamdi, Dr. A. Al-Amar, Dr. D. Nachtigal, Dr. H. Kondo, and Dr. S. Browning.
Invited guest speakers included Dr. Itzhak Brook, Georgetown University; Dr. Jack Gluckman, University of Cincinnati; Dr. Wagenman, Dusseldorf, Germany; Dr. Qutayba Hamid, Meakins-Christie Laboratory; and Dr. Mark May, Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh.
The McGill Otolaryngology Update Course was held at Mont Tremblant, Quebec.
New staff appointments included Dr. Michael P. Hier, head and neck oncology. Dr. Hier completed a head and neck fellowship with Dr. W. Panje in Chicago. Dr. Nader Sadeghi was welcomed back. Dr. Sadeghi completed a master's degree in epidemiology and did an additional year in Chicago.
Presently, two former residents are in their fellowship year. Dr. Erin Wright is spending the year with Dr. David Kennedy in Philadelphia as a rhinology fellow. Dr. Mohammed Elahi joined the plastic surgery department at UCLA for a 2-year fellowship program.
The three present graduating residents will be proceeding with fellowship training. Dr. Danny Enepekides will be in Sacramento with Dr. Paul Donald. Dr. Glenn Kaye will be doing a laryngology fellowship in Memphis with Dr. Gail Woodson. Dr. Khalid- Al-Sebeih will be doing a vestibular fellowship with Dr. A. Katsarkas.
