Design and Operation of Marine Compressors is a compact volume whose title holds much promise. The Introduction describes the book by stating, "it is intended to cover in a broad outline the design, pressons." It does not fulfill that promise. Its strokes are too broad. The one area in which it excels, the operation of the compressors, is not even mentioned in the Introduction.
Air compressors serve a vital service on ships but are probably among the least understood pieces of equipment. As a result, compressors are often selected without the rigorous review accorded to other vital auxiliaries. A book on this subject has the potential to be a useful tool for the engineer.
