This column is designed to encourage the interest of members in the entire range of discographical jazz research. Dick will emphasize the earliest period of collecting, beginning in the 1920s, and Malcolm from the late 1930s and up. However, both will happily overlap. Apart from independent research and articles from members, the column also will include small discographies and label listings, reviews of discographical books and papers, and a continual update on members' works in progress. Each entry will have an 'MW' (Malcolm Walker) or a 'DR' (Dick Raichelson) preceding it, along with a number, allowing for easy reference and correspondence. The name of the individual who submitted the information will appear below the entry heading. Send your corrections or additions to either expert :
MW/51 TURK MURPHY
Submitted by George Hulme
In the Lord discography of Turk Murphy, two versions of Panama are listed. One is CO 48835 from 20 January 1953 and this is given as being on the Columbia LP CL595 which is Barrelhouse Jazz. The other is CO 49925 from 14 September 1953, which is shown as being on Columbia EP B1747.
Thanks to Clarrie Henry (UK) and Sam Linschooten (Netherlands), both of whom are devoted Turk Murphy specialists we have been able to sort out the truth. I have the EP in my collection and it is one of a series devoted to dances. Each dance has its own EP and the one concerned here is four tunes that 'illustrate' The Charleston. Turk Murphy's contribution is Panama. Between us, Clarrie, Sam and I compared the version on the EP with versions on these various varieties of the Barrelhouse Jazz album.
1) 10 inch Columbia CL6257 (US)
2) 10 inch Philips B07740 P (Dutch)
3) 12 inch two copies of Columbia CL595 (US)
4) 12 inch Columbia CL595 (Canadian)
5) 12 inch Philips BBL7088 (UK)
We agree that all the versions of Panama are the same. So the September version in Lord can be shown as 'unissued', if it indeed exists at all. By the way, a minor point. Lord shows Murphy as being Australian. That is not correct, Turk is American.
