Dr. Paul David, a pioneering cardiologist who later pursued a political career, died in Montreal Apr. 4. Dr. David, who was 79, was called a "man of action" by the CMA when it awarded him senior membership in 1985.
That phrase was well chosen. Not only did he found the Montreal Institute of Cardiology in 1954, but he also led the team that performed Canada's first heart transplant -- the 18th in the world -- in 1968. The patient lived for 41 hours.
A 1944 graduate of the Universit& a; Montreal, he completed postgraduate training in Montreal, Boston and Paris before returning to Canada in 1953 to work at l'Hpal Notre-Dame in Montreal.
