In the last year or so, a number of publishers have brought out reference atlases or geographical encyclopaedias, and this one from Dorling Kindersley is one of the visually most pleasing, and is excellent value for money.
This book is divided into four main sections. The first, "The world today", includes political and topographical maps of the whole world over two double-page spreads, and then gives more detail on eight maps of regions such as North America and South Asia. Each map is accompanied by a cross section and a selection of continental facts, including population, highest point, longest river and so on.
