This case describes the trials and tribulations that James Dyson had to go through in his journey of creating a radically new type of vacuum cleaner that took on the established wisdom relating to the technology of vacuum cleaners. The conventional vacuum cleaners worldwide until Dyson came on the scene were essentially a suction type machine, that had a bag in the cleaner where the dust was supposedly trapped. In his own use of such a vacuum cleaner in his home, Dyson discovered that the bags in these vacuum cleaners rapidly clogged, and after a few minutes of usage upon changing a bag, the vacuum cleaner effectively stopped doing what it was supposed to do, i.e., to remove the dust. Dyson's design used the principle of cyclone to separate the dust and the air, and after agonizing trials in the midst of financial privations spanning over five years, he came up with his radical dual cyclone vacuum cleaner. Like most inventors, his initial route was to find a company that was willing to license his invention and take the product to market. However, what he encountered were frozen mindsets and stonewalls. On several occasions, he was also downright cheated by the large established players, some of who stole his ideas and separately introduced look-alike products on their own. This required Dyson to get embroiled into costly litigations across several countries, landing him deeper into financial distress. What drove Dyson through these dark days was his conviction that the world was getting a raw deal in the form of vacuum cleaners that do not work, and he was here to offer a much more effective product. Eventually, he had no option but to get into manufacturing and selling directly. The product gained rapid acceptance in the market. Consequently Dyson also set up large manufacturing facilities in Malaysia, propelled by a desire to contain costs, and also because some of the local population in his native country, the UK, were increasingly getting jealous of his success and hence, set up many roadblocks to his onward progress. The case illustrates the arduous journey that an entrepreneur ends up taking, and brings out the qualities needed for a successful entrepreneur. The case has been developed using secondary data...
