IN THIS BOOK which is primarily based on archival sources, the author analyzes U.S.-Indian relations from 1947 until the end of the cold war. Despite his claim of introducing new sources, there are few revelations presented. Chary's survey, however, leaves out many important events.
It is Chary's contention that because both the United States and India were so self-righteous, each thought it was a model to be emulated. This caused them to have many disputes and misunderstandings. While I concur with that assumption, I am not convinced that America's relationship with India was intense enough to be depicted as typical of Washington's dealings with Third World countries or characterized as "the single...
