Abstract
To the Editor: The study by Bloomfield et al. (Nov. 3 issue)1 showed that extra parenteral amino acids did not increase the number of infants with extremely low birth weight who survived free from neurodisability at 2 years. However, several issues merit consideration before accepting this conclusion. First, thyroid function is vital for early neurodevelopment.2 Monitoring, comparison, and follow-up of the thyroid function in preterm infants have important implications. Second, some nutrients and elements, such as iron, magnesium, and vitamin D, play a role in neuroprotection.3,4 Hence, follow-up of the levels, intake, and alterations of these substances should be performed. . . .
