ABSTRACT:
Today, water quality management faces greater problems than at any time in its history. The agrochemical and industrial discharges may carried away effectively by rains, wind, rivers and floods into the large water bodies and change their physic-chemical properties with high toxicity. The water contamination cause damages to aquatic life especially to fishes which are very sensitive to wide range of toxicant in the water. In present study, an attempt was made to examine the sub lethal toxic effect of Fosmite 50% is an organophosphate insecticide on protein metabolism of different tissues in freshwater fish Lebeo rohita. The LC^sub 50^ values determined for Fosmite for 96 hrs, the sub lethal concentration was selected as of 1/10^sup th^ of lethal concentration. The fish Labeo rohita was exposed to sub lethal concentrations for 1, 5 and 10 days were observed. The results showed that the total protein levels were gradually decreased in all the tissues of sub lethal exposures i.e., liver (26.84%) > muscle (22.32%) > gill (18.48%)>kidney (18.42%) > brain (14.75%) when compared with controls.

INTRODUCTION:
More information about the environmental pollution on aquatic animals has been obtained from mortality studies. Very little information is available about the damages to different organs or about the disturbed physiological and biochemical processes in an organism. The agrochemical and industrial discharges may carried away effectively by rains, wind, rivers and floods into the large water bodies and change their physicchemical properties with high toxicity. The water contamination cause damages to aquatic life especially to fishes which are very sensitive to wide range of toxicant in the water. Different species of fish show active uptake and accumulation of many toxicants such as polychlorinated biphenyls from water bodies. The contamination of water by widely utilized organophosphorus insecticide such as Fosmite is a potential problem for fishes. Fosmite 50%EC (Emulsifiable concentrate) is a broad spectrum, noncumulative, organophosphate pesticide. It is widely used to protect vegetable crop and as well as controls the parasite on animals. In present study an attempt has been made to study acute effect of Fosmite on tissues like muscle, gill, kidney, brain and liver of fresh water fish Labeo rohita. It is exposed to sub...
