Abstract
With a bachelors degree in dietetics from the University of Tennessee, she began her professional life as a clinical dietician in cardiac rehabilitation and diabetes medicine at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City. In 2011, while serving as President of the American Diabetes Association, she was invited to join an advisory group to the US National Prevention Council established by former President Barack Obama, a result of implementation of the Affordable Care Act. “Only through the accumulation of data over many years have we been able to identify more nuanced characteristics relating to type 1 diabetes, especially in the illumination of key high-risk groups such as African-American and ethnic minority adolescent populations who bear a tremendous burden of disease.
