The first edition of the Encyclopedia of Bioethics in 1978 received the ALA's 1979 Dartmouth Medal for outstanding reference. At this time the field of bioethics was new and relatively undefined. By the late 1980s this original edition was in need of revision due to the expanding field, and a second edition was finally produced in 1995. Published by Macmillan Reference, this received the same high level of acclaim as its predecessor.
With the continuing changes and advances in biological and medical research, the encyclopedia needed a through revision and update virtually as soon as it was published. The previous editor, Warren Thomas Reich from the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University, was too involved in a project of his own so he recommended Stephen Garrad Post as editor in chief.
