The challenge of capturing in one reference work the essence and impact of one of the world's great religions is substantial. Robert Buswell, Professor of Buddhist Studies at the Center for Buddhist Studies at The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has coordinated an international cadre of contributors and, in the preface to this encyclopedia, is the first to acknowledge this challenge. Within the framework of alphabetical arrangement (from Abhidharma to Zongmi) the team have emphasized the thematic approach.
This, along with extensive and sure-footed cross-referencing, works well so that readers will not be confused as they navigate their way through the two-volumes and search for specific entries.
