In a nation long captivated by conspiracy, the assassination of John F. Kennedy has become this country's most popular murder mystery. The fascination with the events of November 22, 1963, has been overwhelming, with more than two thousand books written on the subject and still counting. Almost from the beginning, the official version has been met with mistrust and suspicion, and these misgivings have not diminished with time. Surveys consistently demonstrate that a clear majority of Americans believe that there could not have been a lone assassin. This is largely true, I suspect, because most of us have never been able to reconcile the fact that the likes of Lee Harvey Oswald could have singlehandedly so profoundly altered the course of our nation's history.
