Enoch Powell Dead at Age 85
Formerly a Cabinet minister and for 37 years a member of Parliament, Enoch Powell died this past February at the age of 85. Powell was one of the most powerful intellects among British politicians and public figures of the post-World War II period.
Powell possessed a remarkable intelligence. He was a distinguished teacher, soldier, writer, poet, and Greek scholar. Born in Birmingham in 1912, Powell could read at the age of three and spoke Greek at age five. He later won a scholarship to Cambridge University where he studied the classics. After graduation he accepted a faculty position as a professor of Greek at the University of Sydney in Australia. At the time, Powell at the age of 24 was the youngest professor in the British empire.
