Abstract

During the second half of the XVIII century there is a trend in the Metrópoli, influenced by authors such as Gaspar de Jovellanos or Bernardo de Iriarte, to institute a reform of the theater in order to leave aside the Baroque repertoire and follow the lead of the Neoclassical models. In the present article we shall study just how this process of reform came about in Venezuela, analyzing the policies laid down by the authorities: the establishment of new theaters, a school for actors and, above all, the change in repertoire. For this purpose we pinpoint and compare primary sources from archives in Caracas, Seville and Madrid, as well as other secondary sources. Among the conclusions we have reached, we highlight the fact that the reform was not to the liking of the public, which would lead the spectators to stop attending performances in the Coliseo -where Neoclassical works were put on- and consequently start attending performances of Baroque works -so much to their liking- in private homes.
