Abstract
Equitation or horse riding is a noble sport defined by complex physical activity, based on combining neuro-motor qualities with mental and social ones, that requires an effort capacity adapted to the degree of difficulty of each sport event (dressage, show jumping, horse racing and complete event) with the purpose of creating the "rider-horse" couple.
Equitation is:
- leisure activity for children, adults and senior persons, it has no age limitations, it can be practiced at any age;
- is the sporting event that sells out 100% at the Olympic Games;
- acquiring knowledge, social and communication skills, promoting a healthy life style and improving the standards of living;
- maintaining an optimal level of mental, physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spriritual health;
- having an attitude of accepting the protective behaviors and of rejecting the risky ones.
Horse riding is a sport proper also for disabled persons, both physical and mental. There are some efficient programs, such as hippotherapy, known as the most progressive form of therapy, by means of which the persons with special needs become more self-confident. The horse is one of the cleanest animals, intelligent and elegant. Equitation is, has been and will always be a noble sport. It is a combination of arts, history, culture, science and sports. People involved in this field have only one obligation: to love and respect these great animals. Equitation consists of a series of styles and traditions, the use of harness, the presence and the position when riding as well as the capacity to control and determine the horse to perform the given commands. Riding in the proper manner is also part of equitation. Although there are differences in style and equipment between the different parts of the world where equitation is practiced, being in control of the horse and the correct manner of riding are universally valid. At the beginning, equitation was the privilege of the aristocracy. In the concept of our days, it has evolved from the British society sports of hunting, a tradition reserved at the time for the noble people. In time, hunting evolved to become the modern equestrian sport - EQUITATION.
