Anyone interested in studying Canadian ethnic relations over the last fifty years is advised to read this collection of Raymond Breton's writings and absorb its analytical approach. The writings also introduce or extend concepts and analytical tools for the study of ethnicity more generally. Written in a reasoned and insightful manner, the fifteen chapters provide an excellent analysis of French-English relations, multiculturalism, ethnic communities and relations, linguistic and regional differences, and connected political issues in Canada. In addition to the essays, written from 1964 to 1998, there is a chronology of Breton's life and accomplishments, a bibliography of his publications, and a good index and list of references. The book is edited by Jeffrey G. Reitz, who provides an overview of Breton's contributions to the study and practice of ethnic relations in Canada.
Of francophone background, Breton was born and raised in the non-francophone province of Saskatchewan and spent most of his academic life as a professor at the University of Toronto.
