In an academic climate where material culture has become relatively insignificant as an object of ethnographic study, the place, role, even the validity of ethnoarchaeology seems questionable. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate that ethnoarchaeology may help establish a practical middle ground between ethnography and archaeology. Lawrence Kuznar states that the "primary purpose in compiling this volume," which focuses on the South American Andes, "is to highlight some of the recent developments in Andean [ethnoarchaeology] that have relevance for ethnoarchaeologists and archaeologists working in other regions of the world" (p. 1).
