Ezekiel Brown Alembi has passed away on January 16, 2010 at the age of 49. He was known internationally as the vice-president for Africa of the International Society of Folk Narrative Research (ISFNR), a post to which he was elected in 1998, and had organized the interim conference of the ISFNR in Nairobi in 200O1. Alembi was born on December 12, 1960 in Vihiga District of the Western Province of Kenya. 1985-91, he had studied literature and English language at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, dedicating his master's thesis to childrens poetry, and had defended his doctoral thesis The Construction of the Abanyole Worldview on Death through 'Okhukoma ' Poetry at Helsinki University, Department of Folklore in 2002. Himself a Luhya, he published most of his writings in English, but the summary of his doctoral dissertation was written in his native Lunyore. Ezekiel Alembi worked as a senior lecturer (since 2003) and chairman (2007-08) of the Literature Department at Kenyatta University, Nairobi; moreover, he was the director of Kenyatta University Radio Services (since 2007) and the chairman of the Kenya Schools and Colleges Drama Festival (since 2005), and last but not least, an author of over 45 children's books.
