Abstract

The fatigue life of bearings depends on many factors and variables, such as the size and direction of the loadings, the geometry and roughness of the contact surfaces, the kind of material, the operating temperature, applied lubricant, lubrication conditions, rolling speed, and sliding in the contact area [5,6,7]. The further propagation of fatigue cracks depends on different factors, such as the shear stress level, material structure (austenite/martensite), temperature [14], cyclic deformation, the presence of voids and defects, etc. L—rated service life (in millions of revolutions) for 10% probability of failure, a1—modification factor for reliability, a2—material and processing factor, a3—application factor, C—basic dynamic load rating [N], P—external equivalent load [N], and k—exponent of bearing type (k = 3 for ball bearing, k = 10/3 for roller bearing). The application of this criterion requires only the knowledge of the course of the Wöhler SN (cyclic stress versus the number of cycles) curve of bearing steel and the distributions of subsurface stresses in rolling elements.
