The great modernist writer Fernando Pessoa called himself a translator, specializing, above all, in commercial correspondence. For several business firms in Lisbon's lower city he handled English-language correspondence; but he also tried his hand at translating Portuguese literary texts into English, poems by Antonio Botto and prose by Bourbon e Meneses, for example, and into French his play O Manheiro.
