ROBERT F. MEIGS, MARY A. MEIGS, MARK S. BETTNER AND RAY WHITTINGTON, Financial Accounting, Ninth Edition (Boston: Irwin/ McGraw-Hill, 1998, pp., xix, 707). The author's mission, in this edition (ninth) of their text, is to develop the first-year accounting student's ability "to understand accounting information and to use this information in making economic decisions" (p. xv). The authors satisfy this objective with interesting graphics and stimulating text. This textbook can be useful in preparing students to be less procedural and more analytic and critical in their accounting education. If you liked the earlier edition of this textbook, you will find this edition even more appealing.
Students should find the text interesting. The authors combine a visually rich text with spectacular graphics. This combination should make it easy for students to grasp the accounting concepts presented in each chapter. For example, the graphic illustrations of analyzing and recording transactions in chapter two should (1) hold the students' interest and (2) allow them to easily grasp the bookkeeping concepts associated with each transaction.
