As the growth rate of the Hispanic/Latino population continues to increase in the United States, and with more than thirty million Hispanic Catholics with roots in this country as well as in Latin America, the church seeks to revitalize participation in its liturgical life, creating opportunities to celebrate together in different settings.
Oregon Catholic Press has put much thought into devising a book that will be as useful as possible to many different Spanish-speaking congregations. The title Flor y Canto has its roots in the Aztec culture. For the Aztecs flor y canto (flower and song) coming from the heart symbolized truth and the way to communion with God.
The book opens with the Spanish language ordinary of the Mass. While some Roman Catholics will have these texts memorized, their availability in a prominent location is very helpful for visitors who may not know either the ritual or the language. These texts are interlined with the music from Mary Frances Reza's "Misa San José," a sturdy setting, and several of the Roman Missal chants.
