Four Chinese Love Lyrics was composed in January of 1965 and first performed by Lynn Meyers, soprano, with John Duke at the piano, at Smith College in November of that year. They were offered to Walter Foster of Recital Publications in 1984, but Duke died that year, and the songs were never published. When Foster recently donated his correspondence with Duke to the John Duke Papers in the Smith College Archives, staff members there discovered that Recital Publications had been interested in issuing the work. This publication, edited by Clifton J. Noble, Jr. and Marlene M. Wong, is the result of that discovery. It should be noted that these Chinese poems are different from the Three Chinese Love Lyrics for tenor composed in 1964 and published in Volume I of Songs by John Duke by Southern Music Company...
