On 19 August 2016, the French authorities adopted Decree No 2016-11371 on the origin of milk, as well as of milk and meat when used as ingredients. From 1 January 20172 until 31 December 2018, this decree imposes to indicate the origin of milk used as an ingredient on the labeling of dairy products marketed in France, and the origin of the meat used in transformed products (including meat preparations and mechanically separated meats).
This measure concerns products containing a proportion greater than 50 % of milk and/or milk ingredients, and greater than 8 % of meat.
The Annex of the decree mentions the products which are concerned:
- As to milk products:
- Milk and cream, not concentrated or containing added sugar or other sweetening matter;
- Milk and cream, concentrated or containing added sugar or other sweetening matter;
- Buttermilk, curdled milk and cream, yogurt, kephir and other fermented or acidified milk and cream, whether or not concentrated or containing added sugar or other sweetening matter not flavoured nor containing added fruit, nuts or cocoa;
- Whey, whether or not concentrated or containing added sugar or other sweetening matter; products consisting of natural milk constituents, whether or not containing added sugar or other sweetening matter, not elsewhere specified or included;
- Butter and other fats and oils derived from milk; dairy spreads;
- Cheese and curd.
