A 43-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus was hospitalised for poor glycaemic control despite high doses of insulin. His medications included furosemide [Lasix], which had been steadily increased since 2005 for idiopathic oedema. In August 2010, he was receiving furosemide 750mg [route and frequency not stated] and insulin 450U. Furosemide was gradually withdrawn over 4 weeks. A low carbohydrate diet and fluid restriction were advised, and insulin doses were decreased to 90U daily. He also lost 8kg, which probably contributed to his improved insulin resistance.Author Comment"This case not only confirms the link between Lasix and poor glycaemic control in a diabetic patient but also highlights the importance of judicious prescribing."
