Abstract
To be fully prepared for success, regional group purchasing programs must: 1. develop an updated approach, identifying what the organizations do best, where their services fit in the industry, and goals and objectives, 2. focus on successes and develop better reporting and data-gathering techniques to substantiate success, and 3. emphasize the organizations' ability to better offer local products and services. A committee for strategic long-range planning should be formed to develop and implement a business plan for the purchasing program. To determine trends within the membership, an accurate survey instrument must be prepared and administered to purchasing directors and chief executive officers. The long-range plan should include strategies for identifying additional group members, persuading them to join, and developing a strong program for members' diverse needs. Development of monthly reporting procedures by vendors should be established with a backup mechanism for verification from members. Accurate data would make successful contracts more easily identifiable.
