As intertidal species, Porphyra is frequently exposed to excessive photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and potentially harmful UV-light. Carotenoids are important for protection of the photosynthetic apparatus under excessive PAR, while mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) protect against UV-related damage. Here, we have explored the genetic basis of the biosynthesis of carotenoids and MAAs in Porphyra.
