Abstract

George Ciprian was known first as an actor, under the name of Gheorghe Constantinescu. Soon after he became an actor, he changed his name to George Ciprian, because of marketing reasons, so to say. Under this name he would become famous as a dramatist, not only in Romania but also in Europe, mostly due to his play Omul cu mârţoaga. He is now almost forgotten as an actor - although he was one of the most important actors of the National Theatre in Bucharest - but he is mentioned in every important history of the Romanian drama. However, few people know that he wrote a novel as well, with autobiographical origins - like most of his writings. The novel, a rather picaresque one, doesn't have the complexity we would expect. It narrates small events from the journey of a character whose existence lies, as the title suggests, under the sign of chance, of the permanent temptation of luck - the title evokes the two variants of roulette: even and odd, variants which can, in turn, mean agony and ecstasy. Without being a great novel, it is a mirror which completes the image of a very interesting artist and person.
