The Globe and Mail: Canada's Heritage from 1844 is a digitized, full page, searchable archive of this national newspaper from June 1844 to December 1999. Coverage includes major events in Canada's history plus all "stories, images, advertisements, classifieds, political cartoons, births and deaths from more than 1.4 million pages". Accessed through MicroMedia ProQuest's Web portal, Canada's Information Resource Centre, this source chronicles the events, peoples and situations that shaped the development of Canada over time.
Using the latest in newspaper archive technology, pages were taken from the highest quality microfilm available and digitized using Archive Publisher, a programme developed by Cold North Wind Inc. Using optical character recognition, these images were then rendered searchable. This, in itself, has inherent problems. If the microfilm was incomplete or damaged, but was the best copy available, then that is what is searchable in this database.
