In Sacrosanctum concilium the second Vatican Council created the possibility of theological reflection in the reform of the liturgy since the Roman Catholic Church had always understood the insights of the liturgical movement at a theological level. Equipped with the neo-Thomist tradition and the work of Casel, Sacrosanctum concilium set out a vision based on a Christological apprehension of liturgical action. The essays gathered in this book form a programmatic commentary on the Council document. Thus Catella's essay "Theology of the liturgy" sets out the agenda at the beginning, by being mindful of the liturgical experience as the primary moment of revelation, but not neglecting the significant role of history or of the manner in which this dynamic revelation relates to scriptural revelation, in particular as it is liturgically received. Then, beginning with epistemology (where Valenziano in "Liturgy and symbolism" sets out to extend the scope of symbolic language) and going on to look at the practical outcome of the theological program underlying the work of liturgical reform (with essays for instance on "Liturgy and spirituality"...
