The Andersen Award Jury of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) has announced Katherine Paterson (USA) as the winner of the 1998 Hans Christian Andersen Author Award and Tomi Ungerer (France) as the winner of the 1998 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration.
The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are given by IBBY every two years to two individuals-one author and one illustrator-whose complete works have made an important contribution to children's literature. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is the patron of the Hans Christian Andersen Awards, which are regarded as the highest international distinction for authors and illustrators of children's books. The awards will be presented to the winners at the 26th IBBY Congress in New Delhi, India, September 20, 1998.
