THE 2007 HMSS WORKING SEMINAR 1
Introduction
THE FOURTH International Working Seminar of the Harriet Martineau Sociological Society (HMSS) convened at Maynooth, Ireland, 21-23 May 2007. This year, the HMSS Seminar was sponsored by the Department of Sociology in the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM). The Seminar was launched with a reception hosted by Mary Jo Deegan and Michael R. Hill in the Cashel Rooms, Stoyte House, during which Professor Sean O'Riain, Chair of NUIM's Department of Sociology, formally welcomed the Seminar participants and official HMSS observers to the campus. The Seminar was co-organized by Michael R. Hill and Deborah A Logan. Brian Conway served admirably as the coordinator of local arrangements.
Two full days of formal papers and lively discussion unfolded in the Physics Hall, abstracts of which, prepared by the participants, are provided below. The lion's share of the papers directly addressed Martineau's life and sociological work. Various presentations also reported on parallel investigations in the history and contributions of other early women sociologists. The complete texts of selected papers are scheduled to appear in 2008 in Advances in Gender Research, Volume 12, edited by Marcia Texler Segal and Vasilikie Demos.
