The Virginia Historical Society's annual meeting offers an opportunity to recognize excellence in teaching, scholarship, and volunteer service. Austin Brockenbrough III, the Society's president, officiated at this year's proceedings, which took place on Saturday, 24 April.
The Bobby Chandler Student Award honors a Virginia secondary student who demonstrates creativity and a historian's detective skills in interpreting primary sources. This year, two students from St. Gertrude's in Richmond shared the award. Sarah Krumbein and Tara Nau conducted their research on the lives of Virginia women in the 1920s. The students accepted their certificates and checks for $125 from trustee Helen Turner Murphy of Montross.
The Society presents the Brenton S. Halsey Teaching Excellence Award to an educator who demonstrates scholarship, enthusiasm, and creativity in the teaching of Virginia and American history. Trustee Hugh V. White, Jr., of Richmond presented this year's Halsey Award to Dr. Wayne Boese, who teaches at St. Christopher's in Richmond.
