Anti-ulcer activity of Siddha drug, Aya Chendooram was studied in rats in which gastric ulcers were induced by acetic acid on anterior serosa surface. The Chendooram was administered in three dose levels 20, 40 & 80 mg/kg for the period of fifteen days. The anti-ulcer activity was assessed by determining the ulcer area, percentage healing rate, non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH) group in test group with that of vehicle as control group. Antioxidants parameters like catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), lipid peroxidation (LPO) were also estimated. Omeprazole was used as reference drug. The both dose levels 40mg/kg and 80 mg/kg showed significant (p<0.001) decrease in ulcer area with % healing rate of 60.84 & 83.16 respectively, which was supported by biochemical parameters like NP-SH, CAT, SOD and LPO. The results demonstrate that the drug may have ulcer healing activity.
INTRODUCTION
Gastric ulcer is a common disorder where discontinuity in the gastric mucosa is observed. The conventional treatment of ulcer comprises of regular feeds and adequate rest, antacid, various drugs and avoidance of ulcerogenic agents such as coffee, alcohol and tobacco. The drugs used in the treatment of ulcer include receptor blockers, proton pump inhibitors, drugs affecting the mucosal barrier and act on the central nervous systern (Manonmani et al., 1995). Even though a range of drugs are available for the treatment of ulcer, many of these do not fulfill all the requirements and have side effects such as arrhythmias, impotence and hematopoietic changes are noted (Ariyoshi et al., 1986; Satoh et al.,1988).
Aya chendooram is a Siddha formulation according to Siddha systern Aya means iron fillings and chendooram means as a red colour powder. Aya chendooram prepared from iron filings, vinegar and odena bark juice. It has been widely used in therapeutic management of insufficiency of seminal secretions, spermatorrhoea and premature ejaculation also in anaemia and rheumatism. The wet and atomic absorption spectroscopy reports revealed that it mainly consist of copper, zinc, iron, lead and mercury (Formulary of Siddha Medicines, 1993). In the limelight of its traditional use, the present investigation was carried out to evaluate ulcer healing effect of Aya chendooram on acetic acid induced chronic ulcer model in rats.
